Cincinnati Bike Map

Bike maps are a curious thing. Since the 1890’s when the first ones appeared, bike maps have taken an unusually limited and subjective approach to describing street conditions. In a nutshell, this map was an attempt to bring objectivity and fine-grained detail back into the genre. For a larger nutshell (a bandshell?), I would refer you to my first academic paper on the topic, published in Cartographic Perspectives, volume 81.

The map itself was printed in September 2014 with 9,000 paper copies produced and distributed for free in the Cincinnati area. A slippy-map version is still hosted here. The whole project was open-sourced and a detailed technical description of the project is available on the OpenStreetMap wiki. There are full-resolution images hosted on Wikimedia Commons.

I may also mention that the map was presented at my first meeting of the North American Cartographic Information Society (Pittsburgh, 2014) where it won the student map and poster competition.
